Optometrist vs Ophthalmologist

Both care for eyes, but their training and scope differ.

What to expect

Optometrists (OD) handle exams, prescriptions, and many eye diseases. Ophthalmologists (MD/DO) are physicians who also perform eye surgery.

What the evidence says

For routine care, glasses, contacts, and many common conditions, an optometrist is appropriate. Surgical needs (cataracts, retinal surgery) require an ophthalmologist, often via optometrist referral.

Educational summary, not medical advice. Evidence evolves — discuss options with a licensed provider.

When to see a physician

Conditions needing surgery or advanced medical treatment are referred to an ophthalmologist.
