What to Expect at an Eye Exam
A routine comprehensive eye exam checks both vision and eye health.
What to expect
Vision testing, refraction for your prescription, eye-pressure and retinal checks, and often dilation. It usually takes 30–60 minutes.
What the evidence says
The American Optometric Association recommends comprehensive eye exams at regular intervals — more often for children, people over 60, and those with diabetes or a family history of eye disease.
Educational summary, not medical advice. Evidence evolves — discuss options with a licensed provider.
When to see a physician
Seek urgent care for sudden vision loss, flashes and floaters, eye pain, or injury.
